The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a fast page-turner, a European crime novel with the fast paced plot of a Michael Connelly and  rich characterisation of Elizabeth George.   The first novel of the fully published trilogy from the late Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson who died in 2004, shortly after handing over the three manuscripts.

Disgraced financial journalist, sentenced to jail for libelling a shady businessman, Mikael Blomkvist, is watching his professional life fall apart. Semi-retired Swedish industrialist Henrik Vanger makes him an unexpected offer to restore his name. Vanger wants to discover what happened to his beloved great-niece before he dies. Blomkvist is expected to live for a year on the island where many Vanger family members still reside and where Harriet was last seen.

And so Blomkvist starts researching a cold case that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. He enlists the help of multi-pierced, tattooed investigator, Lisbeth Salander. A young feral superhacker with aspergers and authority issues. The two gradually uncover the truth as the novel explores themes of journalistic ethics, misogyny, and sexual violence and bare the abuse that left Lisbeth such a damaged young woman.
