I used to have a Practica film SLR camera but since I got a digital camera it has lost its appeal. The convenience of being able to take multiple shots and keep only the best makes film seem too expensive now. But I miss the SLR camera. There always seems to be a time lag of a few seconds with digital so you seem to miss the best shot you were aiming for. A digital SLR camera is said to remove this. You also have the best framing experience with an SLR camera.
So on my wish list for next year (these are too expensive for Christmas, it’s a save the pennies project!) I rather like the look of the Nikon digital SLR camera or perhaps the Canon. Still not sure to go with a zoom or get separate lenses. Then there’s the camcorder option. Too much choice!
I always wanted and still want a Hasselblad but I think I have to wait until my next lifetime for that! Overall at the moment the Nikon looks like the best option. It has a big screen as well, I find it really hard to make “snap” shots when I have to get out my glasses to see what I’m looking at on a digital camera.
You can probably get voip through your internet provider but have you thought about paying for Skype ( to call people who don’t have Skype) and getting a USB Skype phone adapter so you can use your normal phone?
Didn’t know such a thing was a possible myself, but was talking to someone about it on the weekend at a Christmas party. So I did a quick search and found the DPH-50U Skype phone adapter at Amazon.
The DPH-50U allows you to accept both regular calls and Skype calls from the same phone. If you are talking to someone on your regular line and receive an incoming Skype call, you can easily switch lines to take the Skype call or vice versa, just like call-waiting. You can also conference call between regular phone and Skype lines.
If you are like myself, i hate making changes to internet providers and phone companies, I dread getting on the phone and get a headache just trying to suss out about who is offering the best deal ! But I know and like Skype already and its my new years resolution to be more proactive about getting better deals on utilities such as phone and power, could be worth looking into?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a fast page-turner, a European crime novel with the fast paced plot of a Michael Connelly and rich characterisation of Elizabeth George. The first novel of the fully published trilogy from the late Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson who died in 2004, shortly after handing over the three manuscripts.
Disgraced financial journalist, sentenced to jail for libelling a shady businessman, Mikael Blomkvist, is watching his professional life fall apart. Semi-retired Swedish industrialist Henrik Vanger makes him an unexpected offer to restore his name. Vanger wants to discover what happened to his beloved great-niece before he dies. Blomkvist is expected to live for a year on the island where many Vanger family members still reside and where Harriet was last seen.
And so Blomkvist starts researching a cold case that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. He enlists the help of multi-pierced, tattooed investigator, Lisbeth Salander. A young feral superhacker with aspergers and authority issues. The two gradually uncover the truth as the novel explores themes of journalistic ethics, misogyny, and sexual violence and bare the abuse that left Lisbeth such a damaged young woman.
Stephenie Meyer Twilight Series with it’s unusual vampire love story has touched the imagination of thousands of young readers and the awesome first film brought it to the attention of even more.
This 4 volume gift set includes Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn all in a special hardcover binding. The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer would make a great gift for any fan or teen with a taste for a touch of horror and romance. Also included are 4 5×7 cards that have the cover picture on one side, with a quote from the corresponding book written on the other.
For example: “About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him – and I didn’t know how dominant that part of him might be – that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”
The new Stephen King novel is out in hardcover. It’s called “Under the Dome“ and its a BIG long thrilling novel that will keep you up all night (for a week or so, as is usual).
Comes with a map of the small town of Chester’s Mill, Maine, and a cast of characters (including dogs). The town’s people must fight to survive when their town is surrounded by an invisible force field.
This dome’s environmental effect and the dirty tactics of a local politician, Big Jim Rennie, who likes the idea of dominating isolated people are the bad guys. On the side of good are a drifter and Iraq veteran, a newspaper editor, a gang of teen skateboarders and a huge cast of other characters fighting to survive the dangers of being under the dome.
New Stephen King novels are always on my Christmas wish list. Reviewers are relating it to “the Mist” or “the Stand”. It sounds like its on the darker edge of the horror world which has left some reviewers with mixed feelings but true fans will be reading “Under the Dome” whatever misgivings reviewers have and so will I.

The new Super Mario Bros is out for Wii and I think it’s going to be a real hit in our household this Christmas.
I have two sons and have lived with the Super Mario brothers theme tune in my head for most of their lives. We started out with 2D Nintendo games and I died often and never got anywhere with it, but my first son finished every game.
We were all totally awed by 3D when it became available. Tim was a lot younger then and he cut his teeth on this version of the Super Mario Bros game. I loved it because I could wander around and swim in the water and walk through the virtual world and not die immediately. You might have guessed by now that I don’t have the fast reactions needed to excel at these types of video games!
The whole family absolutely loved Mario Cart and raced Mario, Luigi, Princess and Donkey Kong round the track and bananas aside I even won a few times. It was simply the best!
Last week Nick brought home the New Super Mario Bros
game for Wii and its been a real blast from the past to hear the old theme tune blaring out from the bedroom again and to hear both boys laughing and groaning over it. A mix of old 2D and new challenges – I admit – I die in less than a minute. But that’s me.
I know what will be keeping the extended family amused this Christmas and I’ll be in the kitchen cooking anyway! Think I’d better put two or more Wii controllers on the shopping list as well…
